If you have children you'll want to give them a love of
books at an early age so that they grow up enjoying the
wonders of the written word. Children's literature has
become big news over the past few years and the sale of
these types of books continues to grow each month. Parents
are extremely interested in giving their children the start
that they need when it comes to education and learning.
Reading is a great way to prepare your child to look at the
world openly and inquisitively.

There are many types of children's books that you have to
choose from when buying for children. No matter how old your
children are you'll be able to find a topic that interests
them. For infants and toddlers you'll want to choose books
that are bright and easy to look at. Young children aren't
interested in the written word but they are fascinated with
the pictures and the sounds that go along with the words
that you're saying.

For babies and toddlers you'll want to choose books based on
the pictures. Children that are aged three to six will look
for other features in the books that interest them. They not
only want to look at the pictures, they also want to be
entertained. They also want to associate the words that
you're speaking with the pictures in front of them. They'll
want to follow along with you as you read the book out loud
to them. When left on their own to play, children of this
age will read back, from memory, what you have previously
read to them.

When children are between 4 and 6 years old, they will be
interested in the story that goes with the pictures. The
most sought after books for kids in this age group tell
stories of everyday family life. They will like associating
events in their own experiences with those in the books.

School children have more requirements from their books.
They need books which besides being interesting provide them
with opportunity to learn and improve their reading ability.
At the same time these books must be easy for them to follow
and on popular topics such as adventures, mysteries, and
fantasy.

Older children that are reading well on their own will want
to read books that are longer and have a subject matter that
keeps them entertained for long periods of time. The Harry
Potter books are of course some of the most requested books
in the children's literature market today.

Other themes of books that your older child will appreciate
are books where the protagonist solves a problem through the
mastery of personal power. These types of books appeal to
older children since it gives them a feeling of self control
and personal growth. Of course, your children may not think
of what they read in such a way, but they will still be
reaping the benefits of positive and well written
literature.

However, al these tips are by no means an exact guide to
buying children's books. It continues to be a tricky
exercise as each child has his or her own particular taste.
You have to use the trial and error method. You will find
that for no particular reason children like some books and
leave other untouched.

Whenever you make a trip to a children's bookstore, take
your child with you. This way they can learn to pick their
own literature. You may need to help them learn appropriate
subject matter for their ages and reading abilities.
