The Truth About Online Degrees
by Gradha Halter

Online degrees have become very popular of late. The reason
is simple. People want to continue their education and want
some certification for it, but they do not have the time to
go to a regular school. In such a situation making use of
the Internet to obtain a degree appears to be the perfect
solution. You can pursue your studies at a time convenient
to you, work at your own pace and work from the comfort of
your own home. Most companies that offer these degrees
promise all this. However, things are not as rosy as they
seem and very often the dream to get an easy degree never
gets translated into reality.

First of all, there are very few companies that offer
credible and acceptable degree programs. There may be some
who offer classes from accredited universities online, but
very few offer true degrees for all-online coursework. Yale,
Princeton, Brigham Young University, and several state and
community colleges offer online course options for finishing
a degree, but not a start-to-finish complete course.

The University of Phoenix is the most reputable of the
programs that offer degrees that can be earned online.
However, some of their programs do require weekly or
monthly attendance in an actual classroom. Most 'online
universities' offer degrees that are in fact useless in the
'real' world. While it might be interesting to receive a
certificate in something, and while one might gain useful
knowledge, the fact remains that a degree earned from an
online program is just not considered as valid as a degree
earned in person by attending school.

Another fallacy related with online degrees is that you will
be allowed to submit your assignments whenever it is
convenient to you. Only scams and disreputable programs
allow that. Most online courses give specific dates and you
are expected to adhere to them and turn in your projects and
papers at specific times.

Nevertheless, if you take an online course to complete a
started degree, or to fulfill some needed requirement, it
can be a good idea. But, they are not reliable as sources
for complete programs. Technology has made it possible for
you to finish what you start, but in case you wish to take
advantage of the desire to learn, online degree is not for
you. There are no two opinions about getting a degree at
whatever stage in your life. It is a worthy goal and should
be pursued with utmost sincerity, which is not possible
entirely from home. In the real world you need a real degree
obtained in a real atmosphere of a college or university.
