The College of Your Choice

As high school juniors start their school year, it becomes
apparent that one thing they need to do is start looking
for a college. If one wishes to attain a college education,
it is a good idea to begin the search process during
junior year (if not before). This is because most
applications are due by the end of the first semester or
the beginning of the second semester of a students' senior
year in high school. And it is not a bad idea to apply to
more than one school. But just as important as getting into
a college is making sure that you attend an institution
that works for you and will fit your needs.
Every student is different, and therefore a college that is
desirable for one person may not satisfy the needs of
another. The first thing that you must do before deciding
on which college to attend is figure out what you want from
your education. Will you want a large school with many
people? Or are you more comfortable with the personal
attention you would get at a smaller school? Does a program
at one school fit an interest that you have?
You also need to decide how important outside activities are
to you. Some people like to be in a city, where they can
experience the nightlife. Others prefer a more rural setting
where they have peace and quiet. Still others like to be
near outdoor activities that allow them to get away on
weekends to camp. Find out what kind of social scene exists
at prospective colleges in order to decide whether you will
find clubs and activities to fit your personality.
Education is more than just books. There are other things
to learn as well.
After you figure out what life you want to lead through
college years, you can start actually locating colleges that
suit you. Reading up about an institution is great but there
is nothing like a personal visit. You can go and see the
college for yourself and get a glimpse at what life as a
student there will be. You should also try and correspond
with students and professors of that college to get to know
the college better. There are also several reviews and
ratings available on most colleges that will help you decide
which one you should pick.
Deciding where to go for college is a big decision. There
are many factors involved, but it is important to go
someplace where you feel comfortable and where you feel
that you can succeed.
