In this age where we are confronted with myriad choices of
entertainment media, books have taken a backseat. Reading
seems more like a task than a pleasure to some. Yet, there
is nothing like a good book to keep you mentally agile and
healthy, thus preventing even the onset of many dementia
diseases like Alzheimer's and Pagen's later in life. Regular
reading is an exercise for your brain that will ensure your
continued mental health for the years to come.
A love for books should ideally be cultivated very
early in life. Books are of immense value. They don't just
keep you mind active, they also help you learn. Children of
very small ages benefit from books. The colorful pages of a
book bring the word alive for them. The children who read
books are more likely to write and speak faster than others.
The knowledge contained in every book introduces them to
things and ideas that they will use for life. Even fantasy
and fiction introduces them to the concept of creativity.
Reading a book is often addictive and encourages children to
crave more learning and like we all know, the more you know
the better person you are. The more creative and hungry for
knowledge you are the more likely you are to be successful
in your education and in your career.
Reading is not just for children. Well-read adults have a
greater breadth of understanding. They are able to
understand and appreciate other religions, beliefs and
cultures because of the exposure that books can provide.
Even in the job scenario, it is important in today's
workplace to keep abreast of the developments in your field
by continued reading on the subject. Books can help you
remain in tune with the latest skills and information in
your specific job area making sure your employer finds you a
valuable asset.
Last but not the least, books can act as a mental
playground, keeping your mind actively engaged in trying to
arrange the letters and words on a page to derive meaning
and understanding. As in any kind of exercise, reading also
requires a certain degree of work and attention. As one
reads the words, the brain tries to conjure images to suit
the words.
Your brain is involved in a very complex exercise and
hence every nerve cell is functioning. Not only will
good use keep these gray cells from dying out but they
will also gather some good info out of the book and make you
something of a wise person. Constant learning only helps
you grow as a human being, so don't leave your books in
the closet, take them out and work your brain.
