Search for a Quality Private School

Private schools are gaining popularity because of the
declining reputation of public schools. All private
schools aren't created equal, though. When looking at
private school education options, look for the best
quality at the best price. Use these tips to help you
evaluate your choices:

1. Go through the yellow pages of the telephone directory.
You may find some schools under the heading "private
school." Check the business section, too; schools are
often listed alphabetically there. Directory assistance
may be another resource you can use.

2. View Websites for local schools. Do a Google search to
see what you can find in terms of Web pages for schools in
your area. The Web pages should provide lots of
information that will give you a quick overview of the
school~s mission, curriculum, schedule, and fees. Then you
can always contact the school for an appointment and a
tour.

3. Seek opinions of friends, relatives and co-workers for
school recommendations. Use those opinions to help you
decide which schools you wish to visit.

4. Prepare a list of questions before visiting. You're
more assured of remembering to ask your most important
questions. Official school literature may also give you
information you hadn't thought to ask about otherwise.

5. Take an extensive tour of the school. Visit classrooms,
do a visual check of the surroundings, ask about
extracurricular activities, and count and average the
teacher-student ratios in the classrooms you visit. Find
out academic and disciplinary standards for the school,
too.

Do not rush into a decision about a suitable private
school. Research carefully, ask a lot of questions,
visit as many as practical. Childhood education is a
one-shot deal, use great care in arriving at a choice.
You may find it helpful to get your child's impressions
of schools so that they will be more inclined to make the
most of the investment you're making on that child's
behalf.
